Colorado’s Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a breathtaking marvel of nature, its sheer cliffs plunging down into the depths of the earth, carving a rugged landscape that captivates the soul. The cliffs are so steep and deep, it feels like you’re looking into the heart of the earth. Many years ago, when our kids were young, Rick and I decided to take a vacation to Colorado to visit. We were all so excited to explore this amazing canyon together. Little did I know that this beautiful family trip would turn into a lifelong lesson.
The Start of Our Day
The day started perfectly. The sun was shining, and the whole canyon was glowing with these beautiful golden rays. My husband, the kids, and I were ready for an adventure. Greg, our little explorer, was especially thrilled. His eyes were as big as saucers as he looked over the edge, totally amazed by how huge the canyon was.
A Scary Moment
But then, out of nowhere, I had the scare of my life. Greg was standing right at the edge of the canyon. My heart just stopped. I wanted to scream, but I knew I had to stay calm for Greg’s sake. If he saw me freak out, he might panic and do something dangerous.
I took a deep breath and forced a smile, calling out to Greg with the happiest voice I could muster. Inside, I was terrified, but I had to keep it together.
An Unwanted Helper
Just when I thought I had things under control, a stranger noticed the situation and started freaking out, waving her arms and yelling. She meant well, but she was only making things worse. I gave her a look that I hoped would make her stop, but she kept coming closer to Greg.
Her panic was making things worse, and I did not want her near my son. She started asking me if I wanted her to go and get him as she inched closer to him. That is when the last drop of politeness in me evaporated. I finally had to shout at her to stay back.
Relief at Last
Thankfully, Greg walked back to us, completely oblivious to the drama. As he grabbed my hand, I felt such a huge sense of relief. It hit me then how important it is to stay calm, no matter how scared you are.
Life Lessons
In my job as a real estate agent, I deal with stressful situations all the time. There are moments when everything is on the line and people are super emotional. But just like at the canyon, Iโve learned that keeping calm is key. When things get crazy, having a clear head helps me handle whatever comes my way.
As agents it is not that we donโt recognize the urgency of the situation, we do, we just need to stay calm so that we can focus on what is needed to accomplish the goal at hand.
Next time you’re in a stressful situation, try to find that calm place inside you. It’s amazing how much strength you can find when you need it most.
Wrapping Up
In the end, staying calm not only saved the day but also taught me a valuable lesson that I can use in all parts of my life, especially in real estate.
In moments of crisis, it’s not a lack of urgency that drives me to remain calm; rather, it’s a deep-seated understanding that only by keeping a clear mind and a steady hand can I navigate the challenges that lie ahead. Gazing out over the vast expanse of the canyon, I’m reminded that sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned in the midst of our greatest trials.
